FREE Scooter Rides (with helmet of course) at GreenFEST 2010, were one of the major attractions at the event on August 14, 2010. Provided by Green Wheelin' Scooters, a Contra Costa County Green Certified Business located in Walnut Creek, CA., Green Wheelin' Scooters sells and services an assortment of LEV’s (Light Electric Vehicles), promoting the move to sustainable sources of energy, low emissions, and preserving the environment. LEV’s produce no emissions, use little energy to charge (They can even be charged with solar panels), and are very reliable and efficient.

The owner, Eric Johnson is the driving force behind the environmentally sound practices at Green Wheelin’ Scooters. EarthTeam's initiatives include COOL SCHOOLS Climate Action Campaign which equips middle & high school students in the Bay Area & beyond with the knowledge, tools, inspiration, & support to take action against climate change in their homes, schools, & communities.

Students can get involved in different ways, depending on their interest & amount of time they have available, the choices are unlimited and include such things as Save the Bay, Indoor Air quality, restoration projects and other research projects designed to teach and increase awareness. Projects done by students are highlighted in the Green News Anthology.

You can now view the electronic version of our 5th Annual Green News Anthology. This publication includes a sample of the student submissions to EarthTeam's Green News during 2009 -- work that reflects students' passion for the environment and their desire to make a difference.

How to Safely Dispose of Unwanted Medications

Due to legal restrictions, the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility in Martinez does NOT accept medications. Please use the following disposal methods instead.

1. Check with your pharmacy to see if it offers a take-back program for your non-controlled (non-narcotic) drugs.

2. To dispose of unwanted medications, pour pills into a quart-size, sealable plastic bag (recycle the empty containers as appropriate); liquids should be left in their bottles, but still put into a sealed plastic bag to prevent leakage. Dispose of your medications at one of these locations:

Do NOT dispose of syringes or needles with medications. Seal bottled liquids in a plastic bag to prevent spills.

3. If you are unable to take your medications to one of the above drop-off locations, AS A LAST RESORT you may put them in the trash:

Take them out of their original containers
Put them in a sealable container (plastic bag or coffee can)
Mix in a little water and an undesirable substance (such as used coffee grounds or cat litter)
Seal the container; put it in the trash
Black out personal information from prescription labels before putting medication containers in the recycling bin or trash

Don’t flush your drugs!

Flushing drugs down the toilet is the least desirable of all disposal alternatives. Scientific studies show the chemicals in many drugs can harm aquatic life. Wastewater treatment facilities are not equipped to remove all traces of pharmaceutical chemicals. If you flush your drugs, a portion of those contaminants will reach local waters.
